Quick answer

How Long Is the Life in the UK Test?

The Life in the UK test lasts 45 minutes — that's about 1 minute 53 seconds per question across the 24 questions. Most candidates finish in 20–25 minutes. Below: pacing strategy, what happens when time runs out, and who qualifies for extra time.

The direct answer: 45 minutes

You have exactly 45 minutes to complete the 24 questions. The timer is shown on screen and starts the moment the test begins. When it hits zero, whatever you've submitted is your final answer set. Most test-takers finish well within the time limit — averaging around 20–25 minutes — but the full 45 minutes is yours to use if you need it.

Per-question pacing

45 minutes ÷ 24 questions = 1 minute 53 seconds per question. In practice, your pacing should look more like this:
  • 30–60 seconds on questions where you immediately know the answer (this should be ~15 of the 24)
  • 1–2 minutes on questions you need to think about (~6 questions)
  • 2–3 minutes on questions that are genuinely uncertain (~3 questions, max)
If a question is taking longer than 3 minutes, mark it for review and move on. You can return to it once you've answered everything else.

What happens when time runs out

When the 45-minute timer hits zero, the test ends automatically and your answers are submitted as they stand. Unanswered questions are scored as wrong. There's no extension button, no "I need one more minute" — the cut-off is hard. Your score is calculated immediately and shown on screen, along with a pass/fail result.

Can you finish early?

Yes. You can submit at any point once you've answered all 24 questions. There's no reward for finishing early — but no penalty either. Most test-takers submit after about 25 minutes. Use the leftover time, if you have it, to revisit any questions you marked for review.

Who qualifies for extra time?

Candidates with a documented disability, learning difficulty, or medical condition that affects their ability to read or process questions at standard pace can apply for extra time. You need to flag this at booking and provide supporting documentation (typically a letter from a medical professional or educational psychologist). The Home Office will then approve a specific time extension — common allowances are 50% extra (67.5 minutes total) or 100% extra (90 minutes total). Apply at least 2 weeks before your test date. FAQ

Common questions

Is the 45-minute timer the same for everyone?
Yes by default, but extra time is granted for candidates with documented disabilities or medical conditions that affect reading speed. Apply for extra time when you book the test, not on the day.
Does the timer pause if I need a break?
No. Once the test starts, the timer runs continuously until you submit or it hits zero. Use the bathroom before you start.
Can I finish in less than 20 minutes?
Yes. There's no minimum time. Some well-prepared candidates submit in 15 minutes. We'd recommend at least 25 minutes to give yourself time to re-check uncertain answers — speed isn't rewarded but accuracy is.
Is there a tutorial or warm-up?
Yes. Before the timed 45 minutes start, you'll see a short on-screen tutorial explaining how to navigate the test. The tutorial isn't timed — take as long as you need to get familiar with the interface.
