The direct answer: £50
The Life in the UK test costs £50 per attempt in 2026. You pay this fee online when you book at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. The fee covers the test sitting itself — that's it. The £50 hasn't changed since 2013 and is the same regardless of whether you're taking the test for ILR, citizenship, or another route.
What the £50 covers
- One sitting of the 24-question test
- Use of the test centre's computer and facilities
- Invigilation by approved staff
- Instant scoring and a pass/fail result on screen
- A printed Pass Notification Letter, which you submit with your visa application
What if you fail? The cost of retaking
Each retake costs another £50. There's no discount for repeat candidates, no "second-attempt-cheaper" rate, and no annual cap. If you fail three times in a row that's £150 spent on test sittings alone. The financial pressure is exactly why we recommend hitting our free practice tests first — scoring 18+ on those costs nothing and tells you whether you're ready.
Refunds and cancellations
If you cancel 3+ working days before your test date you get a full refund. Cancellations inside 3 working days, or failing to show up, are non-refundable — you lose the £50. You can reschedule once for free if you do it 3+ days ahead; rescheduling closer than that costs the full £50 again.
The hidden costs most people forget
Beyond the £50 fee, budget for:
- Travel — there are ~30 test centres across the UK; if you don't live near one, expect £10–£40 in train/car costs
- Time off work — most test slots are during working hours; you may need a half-day
- The handbook — the official paperback is £12.99 from TSO, though you can study from our cheat sheets and topic guides instead
- Practice tests — our 45-test bank is £9.99 once (or 2 free)
