What the UK citizenship test asks you
By the time you sit the UK citizenship test (officially the Life in the UK test) you've already met the heavy requirements: 5 years' lawful residence (or 3 if married to a British citizen), English language at B1 or above, and a clean immigration record. This 45-minute, 24-question multiple-choice exam is the final knowledge gate before your £1,500 naturalisation application can be filed. Questions test your knowledge of British history, government, society and values — drawn entirely from the official handbook.
How UK citizenship questions differ from a generic knowledge test
Unlike school-style trivia, the UK citizenship test focuses on civic knowledge: how Parliament works, the role of the monarch, the four nations and their devolved governments, the courts, your rights and duties as a citizen, and the values that underpin British society — democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, tolerance and respect. The history questions exist to give civic concepts their context (why Magna Carta matters, what the Union represents). Pure trivia (Wimbledon dates, patron saints) is the minority.

UK citizenship vs British citizenship test — same questions?
Yes — identical exam, different names. "UK citizenship test", "British citizenship test", "British nationality test" and the official "Life in the UK test" all describe the same 24-question paper drawn from the same handbook. See our British citizenship test guide for the full naming context. The question style and pass mark are the same regardless of which name you searched for. For more sample questions in different phrasings, see Life in the UK test examples.
Beyond the test: oath, ceremony, decision
Passing is necessary but not sufficient. After the test you submit your Form AN naturalisation application (or Form SET(M) for ILR), pay the application fee, and wait 3–6 months for a Home Office decision. If approved, you attend a citizenship ceremony in your local council, swear an oath (or affirmation) of allegiance to the monarch, and receive your certificate. Only then can you apply for a British passport.
