Is the Life in the UK test available in Welsh?
Yes. The Life in the UK test (the British citizenship test) is available in Welsh (Cymraeg) at approved test centres in Wales. This provision is a requirement under the Welsh Language Act. The Welsh-language version has been available since the test was introduced in its current form and is offered alongside the English version — not as a separate booking category.
How to request the Welsh-language test
When you book your test on gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test, you'll be asked for your preferred language. Select Welsh (Cymraeg) at this stage. You cannot switch on the day — the test centre prepares your test in the selected language before you arrive, so the selection must be made at booking. If you realise you booked in the wrong language, you'll need to reschedule (cancelling and rebooking counts as a new booking, subject to the £50 fee if inside the 3-working-day window).
Which test centres offer the Welsh-language test?
The Welsh-language test is available at approved test centres in Wales. Cardiff is the primary centre and reliably offers Welsh-language slots. Other test centres in Wales (Swansea, Newport, Wrexham) may also offer it — check availability in the booking system after selecting Welsh language. If no Welsh-language slots appear at your preferred centre, Cardiff is your most reliable alternative.
Is the Welsh test harder or easier than the English version?
Neither harder nor easier — it's the same questions, translated into Welsh. The subject matter (British history, government, values, geography) is identical. Whether the test feels harder depends on whether your Welsh is stronger than your English. If your Welsh is rusty or you learned it as a second language, you may find the English version easier — the handbook itself is only available in English.
What if I'm bilingual?
If you're equally comfortable in Welsh and English, consider taking the English version, since the official study handbook (Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents) is published in English only. Studying in English and then taking the test in Welsh means translating technical terms in your head under exam conditions. For most bilingual candidates, aligning the test language with the study language is the simpler approach.
Do our practice tests support Welsh?
Our practice tests are currently in English only. We don't currently offer a Welsh-language practice bank. If you intend to take the test in Welsh, we recommend using our practice tests in English (since the knowledge is identical) and focusing on familiarising yourself with the Welsh translations of key terms — Parliament (Senedd), monarchy (brenhiniaeth), constitution (cyfansoddiad) — before the test. The Cardiff test centre guide has local contact information if you have specific questions about Welsh-language provision.
